About Renaissance

Beginning and Progress of the Renaissance The Italian Renaissance had placed human beings once more in the centre of life's stage and infused thought and art with humanistic values. In time the stimulating ideas current in Italy spread to other areas and combined with indigenous developments to produce a French Renaissance, an English Renaissance, and so on.
Facts about the Renaissance The Renaissance was a period in history between the 14th and 17th Centuries, associated with a wave of new artistic, scientific and cultural achievements.
Introduction: What Was the Renaissance? The period of European history referred to as the Renaissance was a time of great social and cultural change in Europe. Generally speaking, the Renaissance spanned from the 14th to the 16th centuries, spreading across Europe from its birthplace in Italy. During the Middle Ages, Italy was not the unified country that it is today. The Italian Peninsula was instead made up of a number of independent city-states, most of which were ruled by powerful families. The period of time during which the European Renaissance fell was between the end of the Middle Ages (or medieval period) and the beginning of the Modern Age. For some historians, the European Renaissance is considered as the dawn of the Early Modern Era.This article will introduce the definition of Renaissance as well as the changes driven by it.

The Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution: The Age of Growth The Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution constituted what was, perhaps, the most significant period of discovery and growth of the sciences in the whole of history. This period preceded the Enlightenment. The Renaissance and Scientific Revolution were responsible for the introduction of ideas such as a heliocentric solar system and laws of planetary motion. Many cite this era as the period during which modern science truly came to fruition, noting Galileo Galilei as the “father of modern science.” This post will cover the contributions of three highly important scientists from the era of the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution: Nicolaus Copernicus, Galileo Galilei, and Johannes Kepler.
Renaissance Medicine Before the Renaissance, medicine in Europe was largely built upon theories, with little research into what actually worked. Knowledge filtering from the Islamic world improved the situation somewhat, but even their contribution hailed back to the incorrect assumptions made by Aristotle and Pliny the Elder.
Renaissance Science - The Path to Enlightenment Many people have a very western-based perspective of the history of science, a view drawn from looking at the world around us and seeing the innovations that arose in Europe and North America. The Catholic Church in Europe The Middle Ages in European history was a time characterised by conformism. It was also a time of fear and superstition. People who displayed creativity or diverged from established methods of thinking and behaving were often punished. Until the Renaissance began to unfold during the 14th and 15th centuries, the Catholic Church held a great deal of power and influence over Western Europe. In the early 16th century, however, this all began to change. During a period known as the European Reformation, the dominance of the Catholic Church experienced a sharp decline in many parts of Europe. Renaissance Art in Italy (c.1400-1600) During the two hundred years between 1400 and 1600, Europe witnessed an astonishing revival of drawing, fine art painting, sculpture and architecture centred on Italy, which we now refer to as the Renaissance (rinascimento). It was given this name (French for 'rebirth') as a result of La Renaissance - a famous volume of history written by the historian Jules Michelet (1798-1874) in 1855 - and was better understood after the publication in 1860 of the landmark book "The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy" (Die Kultur der Renaissance in Italien), by Jacob Burckhardt (1818-97), Professor of Art History at the University of Basel.

The Making of an Artist The Renaissance transformation of the medieval artisan into someone closer, though not identical, to the modern conception of the artist is a swelling leitmotif in this unit. Renaissance Architecture (c.1400 - 1600) This site features the Renaissance architecture's history, characteristics and famous buildings. The architects of the Italian Renaissance sought their main inspiration from Greek and Roman architecture - making liberal use of Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders, combining classicism with the new principles of Humanism upon which so much of Renaissance art was based. Architecture during the Renaissance was also closely associated with urban planning and the dissemination of ideas, thanks to the new technique of printing.
